3 Makeup products that are worth the splurge (and 5 that aren’t)

Who doesn’t dream about walking into a high-end skincare/makeup store and buy everything they have? The idea seems wonderful, but the reality for most of us is a bit different. The ultimate goal is to find the balance between the high-end and drugstore products –  but which items should we splurge our money on and where can we save? Do we really need to pay $40 for a lipstick? Or does the foundation from the drugstore work?

One rule of thumb is to spend more on what you use every day, as opposed to products you wear less frequently. Nonetheless, thanks to innovations in some of our favorite affordable makeup brands, we can scrimp on a few key products, and splurge on the high-end products we’ve been eyeing.

In this post, I’ll share the products that I spend a little more, and those that I identified good quality drugstore brands. I’ll also share some of my favorite products!

It’s the base for your makeup and it impacts the longevity and appearance of your final look.  A good primer helps minimize the appearance of enlarged pores, as well as extending the wear of the rest of your makeup.
Splurge on a good primer and save yourself the time of re-applying your makeup throughout the day or night.

Foundation | Concealer

In our continuing search for the perfect foundation, we tend to reach for bargain bucket foundations expecting that they might work. But let’s be honest, drugstore brands rarely fulfill our expectations.
High-quality foundations make your skin look smoother, have better coverage, and diminish wrinkles and fines line, while also incorporating the skin-care products like serums, light-reflectors, and sunscreen. If your foundation wears well throughout the day, it makes a huge difference, and that ’s worth the price tag.

1 – Test before. Take the time to talk to a makeup professional at your favorite store so that he/she can help you not only with color-matching but also with the best options for your skin type. Do a “test-drive” at the store and ask for samples to test at home!
2 – You may want to have a drugstore foundation/concealer for your everyday look and keep the high-end products for special occasions.

I’m on a constant hunt for a good quality and affordable eyeshadow, and I never could find anything more than ok. Most of them are chalky, lack pigmentation, and wear out in a couple of hours.
Pricier shadows tend to be highly pigmented which ensures it stays on all day; it also blends better and most likely won’t fall out. They are finely milled and feel ultra-soft going on and the hues stay vibrant without creasing.
A good way of keeping the budget on track is to buy mini-size high-quality eyeshadows when shopping for seasonal colors.
If you’re still not convinced, team up your least expensive eyeshadow with a long-lasting eyeshadow primer to make for a long-lasting makeup.

Setting Powder

An affordable pressed or loose translucent powder from the drugstore can typically work, just make sure it doesn’t cause ‘flashback’ when taking photos. It causes the dreaded bright, reflective sheen under your eyes in your pictures.

Blush & Bronzer

Bronzers and blushes are more about the formula quality than the price, so when shopping, look for more finely milled, smoother and blendable texture.
Some less expensive powders may use fillers with talc in their composition, which makes the color change on your skin.

There are so many options under ten bucks that you really don’t need to splurge on it. Brands like Maybelline, Covergirl, and L’oreal offer an infinite number of brush shapes, formulas, and colors. They often deliver full lashes just as well, if not better, than the luxury brands.
In addition, because bacteria multiply easily inside the tubes, you should trash it every three months. Yes, you read that right! Expensive or cheap, the mascara will also dry out either way.

Lipstick, Lipgloss & Lip Pencils

Lip products are so trend-based (except for that special color you love) that I would rather have more options and play with color as opposed to a collection of expensive lipsticks.
When you go shopping for lip products, check if the formula has nourishing and moisturizing elements to ensure your lips get the sheen they need. And if you want to indulge yourself with a fancy brand, check for the mini size first!

Until not long time ago it was almost impossible to find good eyeliner from drugstore brands. They didn’t dry fast, nor was very precise. Most of them were super liquid and it would spread all over after applying it. Lately, I’ve been finding good options that are as good as my all-time favorite, Lancôme Grandiôse, for less than a third of the price![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
